Long, wide canals characterize the cityscape of Papenburg. They were created when the land, then still moorland, was developed for settlement and agriculture.
Today they make up the special charm of the city. Papenburg is known for its large shipyard, Meyer Werft, and its spectacular ship transfers across the Ems.
